THE ROLE

To effectively support our rapidly expanding portfolio of sites, we are hiring an experienced Health and Safety Manager to develop and embed safety standards and requirements for our industrial Spoke and Hub plants first and foremost. This is an opportunity for an H&S Professional to get in from the ground up to build the safety plan, protocols, reporting structure, and standard operating procedures based on applicable health and safety standards and regulations relative to the plant’s geographical location (e.g., Canada, United States, Europe, and Asia). Passionate and strategic thinking H&S professionals have an opportunity to create a truly embedded and integrated safety culture into a start-up company’s plants and ultimately into its corporate offices. Reporting to the VP of Capital Project, this senior practitioner will develop the safety plan and related tools for the plants, develop induction materials, tracking and reporting protocols and tool, establish KPIs, and interface with all aspects of the organization ensure that operations are compliant with all standards and regulations. This capable individual will set up Health and Safety processes and training for multiple locations along with establishing the cadence of on-going and recurring training. They are responsible for overseeing and implementing safety protocols to ensure a secure work environment. Ultimately this role will champion a best-in-class Health and Safety culture.


The Health and Safety Manager will be an independent operator, responsible for overseeing and managing all training and policy development for WHMIS, OHSA, PPE policies, Spill training and all required WSIB reporting in Canada and must also be well-versed in US standards and regulations relative to H&S including but not limited to OSHA, HCS (Hazard Communication Standard), PPE, Confined Spaces Standard, Fire Safety Regulations, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and Drug-Free Workplace Act (DFWA). Other duties include onboarding training for new employees and training for existing employees.

This role requires a dynamic individual who can work in a very fast-paced, changing environment demonstrating a company commitment to project and professional excellence, consulting on multiple projects simultaneously in North America.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Complete an initial thorough “as is” “gap analysis” (potentially with the support of a third party) and prepare a plan for the development of a robust H&S program for either business unit.
  • Identify HSE risks on a continuous basis and recommend changes and updates safety work instruction.
  • Manage the PPE program - Boots, glasses, gloves, uniforms, etc.
  • Provide monthly and yearly analytical reports to leadership on initiatives and results.
  • Assists in overseeing and advising managers and the JHSC activities.
  • Partner with managers, supervisors and employees to create safety work instructions and Standard Operating Procedures. These safety work instructions should clearly outline what (topics such as hazard reporting processes, accident investigation procedures and basic safety rules).
  • Provides safety training and documentation
  • Performs due diligence, safety inspections and audits in all departments and will provide recommendations to correct them before they cause accidents.
  • Monitor and report compliance with HSE regulations across all jurisdictions.
  • Participate in operational leadership meetings to affect the integration of HSE into the conduct of the day-to-day business.
  • Promotes and champions 5S.
  • The Health and Safety Manager may chair the Health and Safety Committee.

Accident reporting

  • The Health and Safety Manager completes accident investigations
  • Report their findings and work with managers and employees to develop plans to prevent similar accidents.
  • Monitoring and reporting monthly and YTD results.

Other Reporting

  • Report any major health and safety issues on a regular basis.
  • Provide safety and legislative updates.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

  • Minimum 7 years’ Health & Safety experience with at least 4 years supporting plant environments that handles hazardous materials.
  • Proven experience establishing HSE programs in a start-up or very fast-moving company
  • Excellent communication, written, reporting, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team.
  • Occasional travel to different sites may be required
