Job Overview
The Shift Supervisor at a metal recycling plant is responsible for overseeing and managing all activities during their designated shift, ensuring efficient operations, compliance with safety regulations, and quality control of the recycling process. The Shift Supervisor will lead a team of workers, monitor performance, resolve issues, and ensure the smooth functioning of the plant's operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervision & Leadership:
- Oversee daily operations of the metal recycling plant during the assigned shift.
- Supervise and coordinate the work of plant operators, machine operators, and laborers.
- Ensure that all personnel are following safe work practices and adhering to company policies.
- Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to team members to improve efficiency and safety.
- Operations Management:
- Monitor plant equipment, machinery, and production processes to ensure they are operating efficiently and without downtime.
- Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
- Coordinate with other departments (e.g., maintenance, logistics) to minimize disruptions and delays.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Enforce strict adherence to all safety protocols, ensuring the plant environment is safe for workers and visitors.
- Conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training to ensure safety standards are understood and followed.
- Identify potential hazards, report safety issues, and take corrective actions when necessary.
- Quality Control & Process Optimization:
- Ensure the quality of processed materials meets company and industry standards.
- Monitor sorting, shredding, and baling processes to ensure proper procedures are followed.
- Implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
- Problem-Solving & Issue Resolution:
- Troubleshoot and resolve operational problems or technical issues during the shift.
- Address employee concerns or conflicts and mediate as needed to maintain a positive work environment.
- Ensure that all equipment malfunctions or breakdowns are promptly reported and addressed.
- Reporting & Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of plant operations, employee attendance, incidents, and safety reports.
- Prepare shift reports, outlining operational performance, issues encountered, and actions taken.
- Monitor inventory levels of raw materials and finished products and coordinate with the warehouse team to ensure adequate supplies.
- Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate with other shift supervisors and management to ensure seamless plant operations across all shifts.
- Communicate effectively with team members and other departments to resolve issues or improve plant performance.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college or technical training in industrial operations preferred.
- Forklift certification is must
- Ability to travel to Canada for job-related training as required.
- Proven experience in plant operations or industrial manufacturing, preferably in a metal recycling or waste management environment.
- Leadership experience, with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse team.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations and industrial safety practices.
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Basic knowledge of machinery maintenance and troubleshooting.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in an industrial environment with exposure to noise, heat, and other physical demands.
Working Hours:
- This position will require shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on plant operations.
